The Downfall of the Third Reich

Overview

The final year of World War II in western Europe saw the world’s largest amphibious operation at D-Day, the largest airborne operation for its time at Arnhem and proved with Hitler’s offensive in the Ardennes that victory was not going to be easily won. Also in that year, the French Resistance fought openly against their German occupiers, more than 15,000 French civilians were killed by Allied bombing, and the scale of the concentration camps was discovered. More About This Book

The Downfall of The Third Reich is a military history of the Western Campaign from D-Day in June 1944 to the fall of Berlin in May 1945. It covers all the battles and campaigns, including Villers-Bocage, Operation ‘Market Garden’ and Operation Dragoon/Anvil, where the Allies landed in southern France in August 1944. It also features sidebars on the major commanders, such as Rommel, Montgomery, MacArthur and Eisenhower. The authoritative text is complemented by full-color maps, which explain the movement of forces. In addition, there are 65 full-color artworks and specification table of the uniforms, tanks, aircraft and ships that were used. Thoroughly researched, authoritatively and accessibly told and packed with 250 outstanding color and black and white photographs that document the military and civilian experience, The Downfall of The Third Reich is a superb work of World War II history.

REVIEWS

A well written text, this gives a good account of the closing stages of the war in Western Europe, including the contribution of the the Allied forces that had landing in the South of France, creating a pincer movement of forces into Germany itself. Plenty of maps, colour artwork of uniforms and equipment are accompanied by both colour and black and white archive photos. Overall a good overall picture of events during this period.
