Fascinating stories. If you love forensic mysteries this collection is terrific. Great $ value too.

I had never heard of the Dr. Thorndyke mysteries until now. Sherlock Holmes stories are more exciting and quirky, since the characters are more idiosyncratic. Also, you have a single narrator, Dr. Watson. In the Thorndyke mysteries, each one has a different narrator, although they seem to share the same Victorian sensibilities and taste in women. It is nice that most of them result in a romance too, not just a resolution of the mystery, although one story is rather tragic and does not have a traditional happy ending with impending marriage or engagement. I like that the female characters are strong, if gentle, and some are very independent. Some even earn their own living, are intellectual or artistically talented and are brave. I recommend this book!
