The fourth installment of this popular fantasy series continues the adventures of a modern-day man misplaced in an alternate medieval world.
Sally Estes
Yet another welcome episode in Dickson's saga about the contemporary-American-turned-medieval-knight/dragon, which began with "The Dragon and the George" (1977) and continued years later with "Dragon Knight" and "Dragon on the Border". Here, the great mage Carolinus has been struck with a mysterious illness that leaves him despondent and unsure of his powers just as a sorcerous threat to England is developing, which pretty much leaves Jim, the dragon knight, to work his own lesser magic. As usual, Dickson provides a nice mixture of humor, action, and drama, not to mention interesting characters who reflect the medieval turn of mind regarding chivalry and brutality. The adventure includes an invasion of giant sea serpents led by an unknown mastermind who has also involved the French in the attack. With English and French dragons cooperating for possibly the first time, Jim in dragon form engages the sea dragon leader one-on-one in a fight that leads to the customary confrontation between good and evil magics. A rousing episode for the series' following.
