Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Fans of Dr. Ernest Drake's Dragonology will flock to The Dragonology Handbook: A Practical Course in Dragons by the esteemed Dr. Ernest Drake, illus. by Wayne Anderson, Douglas Carrel and Helen Ward. With facsimile pages that emulate an antique sketchbook, envelopes to open, a pullout I.D. card from the Secret & Ancient Society of Dragonologists and suggestions on how to draw dragons plus a glossary of hieroglyphs, this elegantly designed paper-over-board volume is a necessity for dragon fans of all ages. Children's Literature
Riding the tail of the successful Dragonology comes this spoof of late Victorian pedagogy. Printed on suitably faded and worn pages complete with ink splotches—not to mention marvelous pseudo-marbleized endpapers—Dr. Ernest Drake's course is presented for young scholars interested in acing membership in the Secret and Ancient Society of Dragonologists. Among the more amusing touches is the description of the French "Gargouille" as one of the few city-dwelling western dragons. Then there are the tongue-in-cheek descriptions of dragon food chains by species (the top of the Arctic Dragon's is the polar bear.) Anonymous committees of writers usually fall flat, but this group obviously had a sense of humor, and a lot fun in the creation process. The end result is entertaining to page through, and for kids who have already plumbed the depths of the latest Harry Potter, the book offers additional diversion, as well as lots of membership cards and shiny (non-period) stickers. 2005, Candlewick, Ages 8 to 12.

Meet the Author

Dr. Ernest Drake is the author of the rediscovered DRAGONOLOGY: THE COMPLETE BOOK OF DRAGONS, first published in a very limited run in 1895. Said to be a noted dragonologist and founder of the Secret & Ancient Society of Dragonologists in London, Dr. Ernest Drake was determined to bring the subject of dragons under the burgeoning umbrella of the nineteenth-century natural sciences. The spectacular popularity of his book DRAGONOLOGY has sparked a great deal of interest in the study of dragons and spurred much rummaging in antiquarian bookshops and attics in search of new Drake material. Happily, this earlier volume created for students, THE DRAGONOLOGY HANDBOOK: A PRACTICAL COURSE IN DRAGONS, turned up recently in an old public house called the Canny Lad in Edinburgh.

    Students Guide to Dragons!

Wow. This book is very good. I have completed all of the lessons and also own the complete book of Dragons. (You should use that book as a reference) It is very fun and captivates your imagination. It really gets you wondering if dragons are real. (I personally have noted dragons and think their existence is real since I was young) I want to get the entire series and the games. I especcially enjoyed the dragon script. I can write and read fluently now.

    grr

this book had false information and i am not pleased by what they said about they fly or breath fire. dragons dont just breath fire or acid. they can:creat shadows, make tornadoes, breath fire, make thunder, blow acid and bring down vines, and squirt water from their mouths

    This is an awsome book!

I have only done 2 lessons in the book and I am already hooked! It has wonderfully illustarted pictures and very detailed descriptions of dragons. There are also many activities to do in this book. I love this book so much and whenever I see a picture of a dragon I atomatically know what breed it is.
