Lucy, a nine year old girl living in the English town of Scrubbly, has an unusual mother named Liz. Liz makes small dragons out of clay, and by using magic she can make some of them come alive and wield special skills. When nasty politicians decide to get rid of the historic but broken town clock, Liz swings into action and creates a new dragon named Gauge. Gauge has the unique ability of being able to understand and measure time and thus is the perfect dragon to help Liz's mother save the town clock. While Lucy is initially reluctant to get involved in her mother's plans, she finds a way to give Gauge a chance to fix the clock and even ends up saving him from the evil politicians. While the rescue mission is only partly successful, the old clock's place in the town is assured when everyone realizes that it has turned into a valuable tourist attraction. This book, part of "The Dragons of Wayward Crescent" series, has many story elements that the younger Harry Potter set will enjoy: magic, dragons, ghosts, and reluctant heroes/heroines. The descriptions of Gauge, with his violet eyes that reflect the stars and his movements ("he fluttered around the curving walls, up toward the light") are vivid and memorable. The book also manages to weave in some science facts about time and the universe, as well as some practical advice about mechanical tasks and good habits for children.
