Overview

Dream Academy was the self-titled debut release for the art-school trio led by lead singer/guitarist Nick Laird-Clowes. Produced by David Gilmour and Laird-Clowes, the group was rounded out by vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Kate St. John and keyboard player Gilbert Gabriel, and they struck the first time out with the album's standout track "Life in a Northern Town," which became a Top Ten smash in the spring of 1986. Dream Academy used lush string arrangements and choir-like background vocals to create a sumptuous backdrop for their paisley-tinged pop. It works to best effect on "Life in a Northern Town," a slice of watercolored nostalgia with its memorable chant-like hook. Other highlights include the sax-driven "The Edge of Forever," the gentle dream recollection of "In Places on the Run," and "This World," with its somber, stark portrayal of the downtrodden. Laird-Clowes' vocals are thin, a shortcoming masked by the soft-focus of the material, and the album falters a bit during the second half; however, the best material on this record leaves you longing for more.

I ordered and bought this CD a few months ago. First of all, I want to mention to those who hadn't ordered/picked up their copies yet that the cover featured on this site is slightly different from what I have. This version with the close-up shot of the band is the import version. The one I have displays a more distant shot of the band and shows more of the background in the park, one thing being a statue. Not that I'm complaining or anything like that, just thought that it was worthy of mentioning to give a heads up on what to expect upon buying. Anyway, I'd been trying to get into dream pop lately, and this is among the music within that sub-genre that I own. I heard the tune to "Life In A Northern Town", but didn't know who did that song before coming across hearing snippets of this CD on another site. This is another refreshing one from the '80s. And this band is a perfect example of one being similar to another, and I immediately see/hear that. One similar band that listeners will also love if they love the Dream Academy is Prefab Sprout. Right down to the front-man, Nick Laird-Clowes sounding just like the Sprouts' Paddy McAloon, which is very reminiscent. I think that the most immediately noticeable tune on there in the dream pop style is "In Places On The Run", which is one of my favorite tracks on this, but all the songs are great. Other favorites would be "Bound To Be", "Moving On", "One Dream" and the aforementioned " Life In A Northern Town". If you like music to kick back and relax to, then get this. Y'all should check out this band because they're one of those that made great material (this may be their best work, but I like their two other CDs from the snippets I also heard), but didn't quite get as far in their success (whether on the charts or in renown) as they should've. They're not one of those acts to be skipped at all.
