How many Italian American women writers can you name? There are poet Diane di Prima, novelist Mary Gordon (her mother was an Italian-Irish immigrant), and biographer Frances Winwar (born Francesca Vinciguerra). But, then, there are also Sister Blandina Segale, 19th-century Sister of Charity who worked in the Colorado Territory and wrote of her experiences in At the End of the Santa Fe Trail (1932), playwright Michele Linfante (her one-act play, ``Pizza,'' is included here), poet/critic Sandra M. Gilbert (nee Mortola), and many talented younger writers. In fact, Barolini has uncovered 56 Italian American women poets, novelists, playwrights, and other writers by scouring libraries, archives, and small magazines. Selections of their work are included in this anthology. A valuable contribution to sociological and literary scholarship. Marcia G. Fuchs, Guilford Free Lib., Ct.
