One-time US Air Force intelligence officer Herman and research strategist Ryan, cofounders of Dream Team Baby, specialists in telephone sleep consultations and sleepovers (for nearly $2000) appear to be cutting their teeth on new parents’ weary desperation. With backing from a team of professional consultants, the book is divided into three parts and covers the usual terrain of Q&As, worksheets, and sample schedules based on the baby’s age.
VERDICT Kudos to the authors for keeping the text under 250 pages—Still, my advice is the same as last year: if you have Marc Weissbluth’s titles on sleep, there is no need to update. See also Harvey Karp’s The Happiest Baby Guide to Great Sleep: Simple Solutions for Kids From Birth to 5 Years reviewed below. No silver bullet here.

    best book on sleep

    This book might have saved my marriage, my health, and definitely my sanity, so for that, I am going to give it five stars. Let me start off by saying that I never write on-line reviews for anything, but now that I am finally getting some sleep I have some extra energy and felt inclined to give the authors a plug since I am truly grateful for their advice.

    I would have never bought this book or sought it out on my own. This was my fourth baby so I really felt like I basically knew everything there was to know about getting babies to sleep through the night. Yet, my baby was almost seven months old and neither of us was getting any sleep at all. I was so exhausted that I wanted to cry. In fact, I did cry … a lot … often for no reason at all. My baby, Billy, and I were in a horrible downward spiral. He slept right next to me in our big king-sized bed, while my husband relocated down the hall. And while I kept waiting for the time between nighttime feedings to increase, he started waking up almost hourly. I was basically up all night long offering him more milk just so I could ease him back to sleep and steal a few precious moments myself. Cognitively, I knew I should put him in his crib and let him “cry-it-out,” but it never seemed like the right moment to start … I was far too exhausted.

    Then, my husband came home one night with this book. Apparently, he thought I needed an intervention. At first, I was extremely angry (hence, proving his point that an intervention was indeed necessary). Hadn’t I done this before with three other babies? Did he think some stupid book was going to provide a magic formula? Did he really understand what I was going through as he slept peacefully in the guest room every night? Did he really think getting nothing but a card was acceptable for my 38th birthday? Sorry, I’m getting off-topic here … anyway, my point is that I had ZERO interest in spending my precious little free time reading a book about sleep training.

    Nevertheless, I reluctantly started flipping through the book as I was nursing the baby that evening. It was surprisingly readable and even funny. The authors were down-to-earth and relatable. The advice they gave was not preachy or over-the-top in any way. The book is broken down in easy to read, easy to follow segments. And, it gives the reader a PLAN, which I so desperately needed.

    When I finally geared up to do the training, I followed their plan almost exactly and it was truly so much easier than I anticipated. Granted, the first two nights were a little rough, but not nearly as terrible as I would have imagined. And after the fourth night, Billy was actually sleeping through the entire night (and has been for at least three weeks now!!) I am so much happier and healthier now that I am finally getting some sleep, but most importantly, I feel like I really did the best thing I could do for Billy.

    Bottom line is this: I’ve read other books on sleep, but for me, this one just resonated with me and made sleep training seem less daunting and overwhelming. I basically felt like I had a virtual coach along side me cheering me on through the entire process. Yes, I’m sure I could have done this on my own, but the book simply provided me with the guidance and encouragement I needed to successfully get through the process.

    I know it sounds silly, but I am so happy to be sleeping again that I just felt compelled to share …. Seriously, thank you Kira and

    Worth every minute of sleep you sacrifice to read this!

    Ryan and Herman have done it. This book was the answer to my anxieties around my kids' sleep. As a mother of three I've been searching these 6 years for a friendly, supportive, and intuitive approach. Having already read a number of books on this topic, THIS is the method I've been waiting for. I can't shout it loud enough.

    Did I let my baby "cry it out?" Yes. Did having my other two cry it out work? YES, eventually. But never did I feel it could be done in such a gentle way.

    This book truly empowered me during this otherwise daunting process: 1) It puts such a positive spin on sleep and the process of attaining it- I could almost hear the authors whispering in my ear in the middle of the night- so encouraging and supportive. 2) It strongly emphasizes all the elements that need to be in place PRIOR to getting down to the cry it out part-- hugely helpful. 3) It helped me interpret my daughter's cries so that when I finally "taught" baby #3 to sleep through the night, I did so without worrying I was harming her emotional development...

    The proof is in the pudding: Baby #3 was sleeping through the night in 3 days and at 4.5 months while the others didn't get to this level of consistency until 6 and 7 months! I haven't had to refer to the "trouble shooting" parts yet but have every intention of going back to this book when the road gets rocky.

    Read this book. Follow their approach (you can do it). You won't regret it.

    I could not be happier. This amazing book taught me how to teac

    I could not be happier. This amazing book taught me how to teach my son to sleep and he caught on right away. They are very good at helping you to prepare for starting sleep teaching. This is my first child and he was 6 months old when I read this book, it changed everything. It gave us a structured day which I did not believe could be so freeing. He sleep 11:30-12 hours every night and that started the first night of sleep training.
    Prior to reading this I was wondering if I wouold ever have another child because as much as I loved everything about my little one I did not feel like I was "doing it right". I knew that he should be sleeping better to ensure proper development instead of waking 4-6 times every night!! Yup, we went from waking up at least 4 times a night to eother sleeping 12 hours straight or waking once in the night instantly... a miracle!! I feel like a person again, my "mom confidence" has grown and I know that he is finally getting the sleep that he deserves.
    I am new to the Nook formatting and this book was a pleasant, easy read on the Nook while I was rocking him to sleep through out the nights PRIOR to the sleep training. Not one single complaint, read it an try.... I am so happy that I did!

    Amazing!!

    We had the pleasure of having Dream Team Baby consult with us when I was going back to work. We put their daytime eating and napping schedule into place and our 4 month old son quickly took to the new routine. After 1 night of sleep training our son went from waking 2-3 times a night to sleeping 12 hours straight! It was a miracle!! It gave me such peace of mind to be able to go back to work knowing that I could count on a restful night sleep! It's been 6 weeks since our consultation and our son is still sleeping like a champ!! Dream Team Baby is amazing and this book is a must read for all parents!!
