Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Originally a popular Web comic, the second print collection of Sava's epic creation is a noteworthy all-ages fantasy story, impressive for both its captivating story line and impressive artwork. The elements of the story are familiar but well-rendered, picking up with college-student Alex continuing his sleep-filled visits to Dreamland, where he joins his old friends Nastajia the elf princess, Paddington the rock giant, Kiwi the fairy and the newly introduced cat girl, Felicity, in the battle against evil dragon King Nicodemus. After narrowly escaping from Nicodemus's dungeon, Alex and his team battle their way to safety, all the while still looking to uncover the secret behind the mysterious disappearance of Nastajia's parents. Interspersed with the mundane concerns of Alex's waking life, the work is deftly paced, sprinkled with just the right amount of action, clever suspense and innocuous romance. The 3-D computer generated artwork creates a world of beautifully detailed environments and colorful characters; while this kind of art has rarely succeeded in comics in the past, Sava makes it easy to read. Readers raised on video games should have no trouble enjoying this superior adventure. (Mar.)

Gr 6-9 -Alex continues to shift between his normal life on Earth and his adventures in Dreamland, where he combats the machinations of a dragon king with the help of an elf princess, a fairy, and a rock monster he grew up with during his childhood dreams. They are joined by a cat woman of suspicious intent, fight a kraken while trying to decode an ancient message, and discover that Alexa's young cousin can visit Dreamland as well. The book launches, with no recap or introduction for new readers, with a reprint of four action-packed chapters from the ongoing six-book Web comic. Rendered in 3-D computer graphics, the images have a sheen and polish that one might not associate with a free online comic. The characters have a lively sense of "acting," with convincing facial expressions and body language, and the settings are composed with a significant eye for detail; the lighting and atmosphere differences between Dreamland, the real world, and the underwater scenes show a level of craft and creative effort that are quite impressive. Ita's unfortunate, therefore, that some of the characters-particularly Nicodemus, the dragon-look more like plastic toys than CGI characters, and that the dialogue veers between functional and hokey, and is marred by a series of elementary typographical errors. Readers initially taken in by the glossy visuals will quickly lose interest as the wooden exposition combines with the limits of the staid, mechanical layouts.-Benjamin Russell, Belmont High School, NH
