The sample provided from which readers are supposed to discern whether they want to purchase this book is little more than 2 paragraphs. A girl wakes up and wonders why it's cold in her room, why her maid hasn't lit a fire. Then she realizes that the servant has probably been dismissed. That's it. That's all the reader gets in the free "sample". Seriously, how is any person supposeed to know whether the author's writing is good enough to take a chance and spend money on this book?!

Owing to the size I think the characters and their motives were simplified or made more concise. Even so, the characters were intense and their motivations apparent. The evolution of the characters was logical and progressive.
I thought the story was a little more practical about a lady's position and authority in Regency England. So the idea that a young woman would marry out of duty rather than love was wholly acceptable. I also found that her loyalty to her retainers was admirable and seemed logical that the Duke would find to be a positive character trait.
I hadn't really quite figured out how the Duke had blackmailed his bride until the explanation at the end. Again it was consistent within the parameters of the story.
It is interesting to note that the author didn't spend any words about dances, dresses and the activities of the ton and the social season. To be honest they're not relevant to the story and could in fact add clutter that detracts from the story.
I found the story very enjoyable and a very quick read. Perfect for a quick read in the last hour or two before bed.
