Overview

Nanci Griffith with the London Symphony Orchestra as back-up band? At first glance it might seem as incongruous as serving country cornbread at a formal high tea. But on this long-awaited project, familiar Griffith favorites "It's a Hard Life Wherever You Go" and "Late Night Grande Hotel," intimate story songs both, gain new dimensions set against the colors of an orchestra. "Love at the Five and Dime," a folk song if there ever was one (and country radio hit for Kathy Mattea) reveals a whole new dimension as Griffith turns it into a duet with Darius Rucker. And this new version of "Trouble in the Fields" sounds almost as though it might have been originally written for full orchestra. While most of THE DUST BOWL is broad reinterpretations of Griffith's classics, there are also three songs Griffith hasn't recorded before: Buddy Holly's "Tell Me How"; Frank Christian's swinging "Drops From the Faucet"; and new original, "1937 Pre War Kimball," a gently humorous tribute to her antique piano, featuring guests Glenn D. Hardin and Beth Nielsen Chapman. Nanci Griffith is an artist with a continuing zest for challenge, and on this symphonic adventure, she's still seeing her own creations in new ways.
