Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristina Cassidy
In this fourth title of the "Cameryn Mahoney" series, seventeen-year-old Cameryn is plagued by the return of her ex-boyfriend Kyle O'Neil. Kyle disappeared after committing a murder and nearly killing Cameryn herself. Now he is back and leaving notes for her everywhere, even beside a dead body. Cameryn, who assists her father in the county coroner's office, must solve a new set of murders while keeping out of Kyle's clutches and figuring out her feelings for Sheriff's Deputy Justin. This book assumes the reader has read previous books in the series, only briefly touching on information from previous books. Kyle's murder of a teacher, the crime for which he is wanted, is referenced only once. The forensics involved in solving the new murders are interesting (the victims drowned on dry land) but take a back seat to the love triangle between Cameryn, Kyle, and Justin. There is only one scene in the autopsy room, but it is not especially graphic. The author spends more time detailing the physical appearance and Irish backgrounds of her characters. The story resolves in a way that makes sense and leaves open the possibility of sequels. Further books set during Cameryn's years in college would allow for inclusion of more forensic details and more complicated mysteries. Reviewer: Kristina Cassidy
VOYA - Jane Van Wiemokly
In her fourth outing in the Forensic Mysteries, seventeen-year-old Cameryn Mahoney, assistant to her father, the coroner of Silverton, Colorado, has to contend with the reemergence of psychopath Kyle, an ex-classmate who tried to kill her in The Angel of Death (Sleuth/Viking, 2006). Kyle had been presumed dead, but no body was ever found. Now Cammie is receiving notes, e-mail, and cell calls from him, calling her his anam cara (soul friend) and wanting to be with her. As the body count rises, Cammie is mentored by medical examiner Dr. Moore, who believes she is a "natural," and that her dedication and eye for detail will help her excel in the medical forensic field. As if these complications were not enough, she finds herself drawing closer to twenty-one-year-old Justin, Silverton's deputy, who declares his growing attachment for her. Feeling stifled by everyone's constant exhortations for her safety, she is torn by her desire to help—but also catch—Kyle, and her worries about endangering family and friends. Ferguson cleverly balances the personal with the professional. She imparts some detailed autopsy information, which is very intriguing, if a bit gory. With the popularity of the television shows like C.S.I. and the novels of Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs, this book and its series with a gutsy, intelligent heroine will appeal to those interested in the medical forensics profession, as well as those who simply want to read a fast-paced, suspenseful mystery. Here's hoping for more in the series. Reviewer: Jane Van Wiemokly
School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Cameryn Mahoney is startled when she finds a note addressed to her at a crime scene. The letter was left by Kyle O'Neil, a psychopath running from the law. The 17-year-old is the assistant to the coroner, but she is removed from the case since it now involves her. Unable to return to a normal life while O'Neil remains at large, Cameryn must put an end to his reign of terror. The protagonist is an interesting character. She is fascinated by forensics and impresses the medical examiner, who agrees to mentor her even though she's a teenager. She can be childish when she's upset and has a tendency to rush headlong into dangerous situations. The descriptions of the autopsies are not for the squeamish. Unfortunately, while this installment in the series is fast paced, it is predictable and shallow.—Lori A. Guenthner, Baltimore County Public Library, Randallstown, MD
Kirkus Reviews
In the latest episode of this popular series (The Circle of Blood, 2008, etc.), teen coroner's assistant Cameryn Mahoney finds herself the focus of both a puzzling multiple-murder investigation and the frightening attention of a former friend turned sociopathic killer. Despite the best efforts of everyone in her small Colorado town, Cameryn is determined to be part of solving these interrelated crimes, even though she might be endangering herself. This becomes apparent when she defies orders and enters the home of the town's recluse only to find a message directed at her along with the man's long-dead body. In addition, the attraction she feels for the young Deputy Sheriff promises to blossom into something special, if only she can help stop the murder spree of her former beau. This is page-turning suspense from the opening scene, with enough gory details to attract fans of CSI and other forensic shows. Moreover, strong characterization and relationships, particularly the one between Camryn and the gruff medical examiner who serves as her mentor, make this more than a satisfying genre read. (Thriller. 12 & up)

    A quick read

There were some good parts. However, grasping the maib character and her position in the autopsies seemed a little far fetched to be totally believable.
