Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - RevaBeth Russell
Like others in the "Body Buddies" series, this book is filled with amusing illustrations, great graphics, and engaging pictures. Correct scientific words are used and explained, such as the "rippling motion is called peristalsis." Abdomen is correctly used, not tummy. These books do not dumb down at all. The "Be a Scientist" sidebars help the reader visualize the unknown. An easy-to-understand nutrition section is included. There is also the story of Dr. William Bequmont, who incurred a hole in his stomach that never healed. For ten years Dr. Bequmont did over 100 experiments finding out how his stomach worked, adding a great body of knowledge to science. I can hear a 7-year-old exclaiming, "awesome," when reading about a hole in a stomach. The books are never gross or inappropriate, just fun, factual reading. I love them. Special needs students who are older than the books were intended to be for would find these great, informative reads. Reviewer: RevaBeth Russell
