If this were an introductory text it would feature the standard profusion of spectacular color plates and of "pedagogical devices". But it isn't, and doesn't. It has more the feel of a gentle, largely qualitative essay, in which the author (Dean of the School of Earth Sciences at Stanford, and recently president of the Geological Society of America) has undertaken to review the principal themes of geology, and the principal trends in its recent development; we have learned to see Earth as a lovely blue ball in space, and (plate tectonics) restless; geology can no longer be dismissed as "dull", as the author has been at pains to make clear.
