Overview

Worldly and influential, Merrick William Hasting, Earl of Huntingdon, is the catch of the season. It is expected of him to propose the belle of the ton. On his way to his country estate, Merrick saves a youth name Chris from being beaten to death and takes him to his grand home. Suddenly, Merrick begins to feel an undercurrent of emotions toward Chris, emotions he has lost since the mysterious death of his wife. Not to mention an attraction of the sexual type so powerful, he thinks he has gone mad. The desire is entirely unnatural and against God's rule of nature, and he must at all cost annihilate his sinful craving.

Shy and loyal to her boot, Christine Smith is disguising herself as a lad in order to protect herself and her family. After Merrick has saved her and fostered her in his home, her devotion and love for him knows no bound. She, however, is very confused and hurt when he starts pushing her away after the arrival of his guests. She knows those vile, scheming beautiful women are competing for his hand in marriage, and she uses her wits and tricks to protect him. Trying to convince the stubborn man so, however, is very hard indeed, especially where his heart is concern.

Tessa Dare may have written other, better books, but you wouldn't guess from the immature writing and extremely implausable plot. At eighteen Chris(tine) is still masquerading as a boy. Acceptable so far, but then she states that if her true gender was discovered the worst they could do was beat her. Has she never heard of rape? Is she that ignorant? She has "walked five miles to the vase factory" every day. Impossible to get there on time unless leaving in the dead of night, to say nothing of the return trip. When rescued by Merrick and taken home in his carriage why does Merrick pull the "boy" onto his lap? Why is Chris as his ward told to help him dress after his bath? Just so she can have to see Merrick naked? So it would seem as he has a valet. Why does she try to valet him after the dinner party? She hopes to pas as a boy, but embraces Merrick and he pulls her closer - why? Merrick tosses her up on his horse, wraps his arm around her waist, smells her body odor and feels her feminine hips wiggle against his groin yet still doesn't realize that she is female wondering why he feels attracted to his ward. The final insult to intelligence was when his valet dressed her and fitted the new clothes to her yet failed, after a lifetime of service to a man, to recognize a female form. I laboured through eighty pages of this drivel and haven't even mentioned the foster grandparents who allowed this to go on.

The Earl's "attraction" to his ward was a little unbelievable. The big "reveal" of the truth should not have taken so long. It made the rest of the story, which is not too bad, drag on too much. The author talks about her brown hair and then turns around and calls it golden. Ugh...Make up your mind please. Lastly, when an author chooses to use the phrase "his member" in a sex scene, I can not give more than a three star rating. 219 pages

This book was a pretty good book. The main female character, christine, was kind of annoying. At some points in the book i actually thought i cant believe this author made this girl so niave. She seemed like she was 14 or younger. But other than that it was a good story. Would recommend.

So all I wasted was my time! This was not well writen at all. The story was full of holes, the characters had no depth and the heroine was unrealistically naive. The writer really needs to reread this and make some major adjustments. The vocabulary was so limited that I wonder what age the writer really is. I had to force myself to finish this.

Really enjoyed the book... the author made the earl's felings very clear without compromising the intent OR insinuating there were any homosexual feelings going on.

Love the book and all it characters. The only thing I didn't like was for the first third of the book before Merrick knew her sex the author was referring to Chris/Christine as "her, she and Christine" when she was right in Merrick POV and it threw me off a couple of times before I got it. But other then that great story awesome read!

This story sucked. Merrick is a pedophile and Christine is an idiot. It had potential, some of the writing good and interesting, but the story was all over the place and did not flow.

Yes, he's attracted to a ( what he thinks is a) 14 year old boy. The author keeps mentioning that he has a physical reaction to this 14 year old boy - one must be starved for a storyline to write this or/and morally bankrupt!
