But the creator of "Rock Symphonies" started out in his teens as a classical prodigy, playing the standard repertoire and recording his first albums for Deutsche Grammophon as the youngest musician on the label's roster. This collection of five CDs brings together Garrett's recordings of works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Paganini, Tchaikovsky, Kreisler, and many others, which he made between 1993 and 1997, before embarking on his career as a flamboyant rock violinist. The first four CDs in this set are reissues of recordings that have been in the DG catalog for years, but the fifth CD is a reprise of his third chronological album, 14, a collection of encores that had been misplaced in the DG archives and belatedly released in 2013. Fans may already have these recordings under separate covers, but newcomers will appreciate the convenience of having all the albums together in one sturdy package.
