Overview
The Eccentric Electrics of Atom & Friends compiles 17 songs by the prodigal electronic artist Uwe Schmidt, who creates music under the pseudonym Atomâ?¢ along with over 50 other aliases. Considering that Schmidt had more than 100 albums to his name at the time of this 2013 release, hoping for a complete overview is moot. However, as far as a starting guide, this selection of songs from 1998 to 2011 makes for a good launching point to his career. A few of his biggest hits came from Senor Coconut and His Orchestra, and "Behind the Mask" is included, along with the inescapable cuteness that is "Da Da Da," which is probably best remembered by its usage in a '90s Volkswagen Beetle ad campaign. Other times, Schmidt went the cover route, glitching out covers of James Brown's "Superbad," Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water," and David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes" in the same style as the Moog Cookbook, doing computerized versions of popular hits sung with robotic vocals. Elsewhere, bossa nova and easy listening soundscapes are incorporated, making many of the songs performed as Atomâ?¢ sound like Esquivel's charming brand of space age bachelor pad music, but with a '90s electronic vibe that infuses springy acid basslines and drum sequencers of that era. Any fans of the playful sound of the Roland Groove Box or the artists on the late, great Emperor Norton label will find a lot to enjoy here, as will those who like to follow the evolution of trendsetters in electronic music like John Baker and Bruce Haack. ~ Jason Lymangrover
