Overview

The Economist Book of Vital World Statistics is a unique source of facts about the modern world: essential reading for decision-makers; fascinating and illuminating browsing for everyone.

At a glance, you can see which are the richest and poorest nations; which have the most serious debt problem, the highest industrial growth rate and the healthiest export record; which spend the most per head on sectors as diverse as advertising and defence; which have the highest ownership level of cars, VCRs and microwave ovens; which have the lowest cost of living and the highest murder rate; and which have the best and worst records on environmental pollution.

Charts and diagrams highlight important regional and national variations, and lively text provides expert analysis of key issues and underlying trends.

The Economist is the world's most authoritative weekly magazine dealing with international politics, business and finance. The Economist Books is the specialist book publishing arm of The Economist Group and joint publisher with Hutchinson of The Economist Atlas, The Economist Guides and a growing list of reference and business books.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
These two inexpensive statistical volumes based on English research complement each other nicely. World Fact File covers 213 countries with a small map and brief data on the country's geography, climate, population, religion, languages, history, economy, education, welfare, treaties, and international alignments. The articles average three pages in length. Data is based on research from the Cambridge International Reference on Current Affairs which compiles for Keesing's Record . Most of the data is current as of mid-1989, with some material from early 1990. This is closest to Gale's Countries of the World ($145), which is based on the State Department's depository Background Notes . World Fact File is more objective though less timely and far less evaluative than World Economic and Business Review ( LJ 2/1/91), which costs over three times as much ($149.95). The Economist Book of Vital World Statistics presents its data organized not by country but in over 110 topics. Data is compiled by the highly regarded Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and may be provided for up to 146 countries. Categories cover topics like population, GDP per capita, land use, caloric intake, trade, labor force, consumer goods, marriage, and divorce. For many tables, countries are divided into regional/economic groups, e.g., Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Asian planned economies, etc. Most data is from 1987-88, though some 1989 data is included. This appears to be a reworking of data from The World in Figures (G.K. Hall, 1988. $65), also compiled by EIU. The Economist is more current and costs less than half the price of that work. It is also more current and less expensive than New Book of World Rankings (Facts on File, 1989. $40). Both titles under review are already a little dated, but international statistics are almost always dated. Their cost is quite reasonable when viewed against similar titles. Both can be recommended for public and undergraduate libraries.-- Patrick J. Brunet, Univ. of Wisconsin Lib., La Crosse
