The Emancipation of Mimi

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
You don't expect to hear a streetwise quip like, "Them chickens is ash and I'm lotion," fall from the well-appointed lips of veteran pop star Mariah Carey, but that's exactly what she belts on the danceable lead single, "It's Like That," from The Emancipation of Mimi. As the title of her eighth studio album indicates, Carey -- called Mimi by her close friends -- has unleashed the less P.C. side of her personality. Departing from the ballad-heavy direction of 2002's Charmbracelet, Mimi is closer in sound and mood to 1997's hip-hop- and classic-soul-drenched Butterfly. Although she can't quite reach the pitch-perfect heights she once did, Carey is still a soaring ...

Although she can't quite reach the pitch-perfect heights she once did, Carey is still a soaring songbird with a signature sound. And to compensate for any weathering of her pristine pipes, she enlists a top-notch team of collaborators. Standouts include the goose bump-inducing, Kanye West–produced "Stay the Night," the Jermaine Dupri–produced doo-wop jam "Shake It Off," and the sparse funk of the Neptunes-helmed and Snoop Dogg–assisted "Say Somethin'." With her next outing, let's hope that the melodrama-prone Carey doesn't disturb the infectious groove she's found here, and that the carefree Mimi is here to stay.

    A reviewer

I love M.C.'s cd Emancipation of Mimi, its the best cd to pick when your hanging out with bestfriends at 10 pm in a jacuzzi star gazing and making memories, or at night when your going to bed!!! Its also great if you just want to lay back and relax after a long day! I love every single track on this cd!!!

I agree with the other reviewer....its not the same

This is NOT the same Mariah I grew up with. I remember listening to her old songs like "You'll always be my baby" and "Hero" when I was 5. Then 10 years later this comes out and I'm shocked! What happened to her voice?? It seems like she cant sing anymore! She does not hit the high notes like she used to and she does not hold notes very long or anything (now there is like one song where she does but it is still not as good). If she keeps making CD's like this I'm not buying another one. I want the old Mariah back....

    Nothing new

Mariah Carey has not come out with anything unique sounding since the early 90's. This CD sounds just like the music she has done before. Get a new sound Mariah!

    Stay in the Nineties!

Mariah Carey was once an excellent singer. She still is, but squanders it for album sales and sells out to the lowest common denominator. "We Belong Together" does not deserve to be the #1 song of the 2000s and "Shake It Off" is very weak. That song with Nelly is lame too.

LOve it, Mariah's music is always great!

I have been listening to Mariah since I was nine years old. THis album definitely shows that her talent will always be there. I love the fact she has come up with hip/hop, rap, and inspirational songs in this album. I was impressed by all of her songs on this album especially "Fly like a bird, We belong together." Cannot say enough about the album and Mariah Carey...

    Not the Same Mariah Anymore

I used to be the biggest Mariah Carey fan but lately I can't stand listening to her! I miss her old songs along with her old voice which was incredibe! She doesn't really sing anymore, it's all about sqeakiness, which is really annoying to listen to! Even Charmbracelet was better than this album. I think this is going to be the last Mariah Carey CD that I will ever buy.

Same Excellent Mariah: With A Broader Sound

I love the sound of Mariah. I am happy with this CD because she ventures into new areas. I even like the "PG" rated song she did with Snoop Dogg.

    Not impressed!!!!!

I'm just not impressed with this album. Mariah is my favorite female artist, but she doesn't "hit the spot" with this album at all!!! I was disappointed to hear tracks that seem more urbanized and generic than genuine and rivoting. Albums like "Butterfly" and "Daydream" show Mariah's true vocal talent and soulful renditions. I wish that she would stop trying to follow the fads of the "hip-hop" generation ( with addictive club-like dance beats and booty-shaking videos)- and just be satisfied with the uplifting and melodic vocalist princess that she is! (Mimi hasn't been emancipated with this one!)

    Still Striving for Her Soul

Mariah's latest CD is a far cry from the disastrous "Glitter" and not overly-impressive "Charmbracelet," but there's still something missing. Some of her songs are so full of the urban rap of Twista, Pharell, Snoop and Nelly that it almost seems that the songs are featuring her instead of the other way around. The best example of this is the male-dominated "To The Floor." On the other hand, she hits the nail on the head with some of her songs, particularly "We Belong Together" and "Circles," displaying the creativity and beauty that Mariah Carey fans have come to know and love. Mariah also successfully tries out some new styles in her album, notably in the nothing-but-fun "Shake It Off" and the upbeat "Say Somethin." Mariah makes huge strides ahead of her past two albums, but still isn't at the point of her 1999 hit-stocked disc "Rainbow."

    The best so far

This CD is the best so far. This CD shows that Mariah has really grown as an artist. I admit when I first heard the CD I was not into it. But after the 2nd and 3rd and when I really started listening to the words and the beat I was really feeling it. Every track on the CD is good and it's not alot of rap on the CD as one reviewer suggested. I think this is a mush have

    Mariah is back

This is a great follow up to Charmbracelet. Mariah has reinvented herself by showing us, her fans, that she is an accomplished singer and songwriter. I love this album!

    Emancipation of Mimi

As A true Fan to miss Mariah Mimi Carey i think she is at a great place in her life now this album shows off her amazing vocals and her influenses of Hiphop/RN,B in songs like Say Somethin with Snoop Dogg, It´s Like that with JD and Fatman Scoup, Mariah is her oldself on this album it isn´t like she hasn´t done music like this before i mean Fantasy with ODB 10 years ago. So stop the bad press people and set your self in her shoes she has been The biggest selling female artist of our time and sold over 160 millions albums worldwide, and 15 number#1 hits. No one can take her place she has this amazing 7 octaves vocalrange that only God can give and it was for a reason. Mariah has helped a lot of people in the world with her songs like Hero and many other beautiful songs she has written, She has helped me through rough times and i always play something with her when i feel bad and i put on this cd now and all the songs mean something to me and to her true loyal fans. The Emancipation Of Mimi is one of her greatest work since Music Box and Daydream. My favorit songs are. Tracklist. 1. It´s Like That what an amazing opening of this album i love this song feat JD and Fatman Scoup. 2. We Belong Together this song is wonderful i love it. 3. Shake It off feat JD off da hook love it. 4. Mine Again oldschool Mariah 70´s ballad with her voice and a keyboard played by James Poyser really love this song hope it´s gonna be her third single from the album. 5. Say Somethin Feat Snoop Dogg what a great track love her voice and Snoop sounds very good. 6. Stay The Night. this is sort of 80´s club song produced by hiphop/RN,B mogul Kanye West i feel Mariah in this song. 7.Get Your Number another club heavie song feat by JD i love this song the 4th track produced by Longtime partner Jermaine Dupri. 8. One And Only feat Twista off da hook love it much. 9. Circles the second ballad from this album i love this song it´s so great that when i listen to it i get tears in my eyes because i see my self in it like she is singin to me. Thank You Mariah. 10. Your Girl a little barbie song it´s nice but not my favorit. 11. I Wish You Knew wow did she have an audience in the studio this ballad amazes me she hits some high notes and this song is beautiful one of my faveorits on this album. 12. To The floor feat Nelly. Another club song not my fave though. 13. Joyride one of the best RN,B songs on this album i love her voice in this song. 14. Fly Like A Bird WOW this ballad is crazy good Mariah sings about her freedom and about our savior The Lord and his son Jesus they have helped her through hard times and i know why her marriage to Thomas Mottola wasn´t a fairytail it was a nightmare This song is all about to be free and to be able to fly away like a bird from all the pain i really love this song it´s a follow up to Hero. The only thing i miss is Mariah´s co-writer in the 90,s Walter Afanasieff they were a great team. Collaborators: Jermaine Dupri, The Neptunes, James Big Jim Wright, James Poyser, Kanye West, The legendary Traxter,Scram Jones and Young Genius.

MIMI IS UNLEASHED !! & TANTALIZINGLY HOT !!!

I WAS NEVER AN MC FAN, BUT NOW I AM, DUE TO THE FACT THAT THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST PRODUCTIONS OF THE YEAR. WE KNOW THE INTERNATIONAL SMASH "IT'S LIKE THAT" IS HOT! BUT ANOTHER SMASH IS THE R&B LACED POWER JAM "WE BELONG TOGETHER" IT IS INCREDIBLE! ANOTHER GEM "MINE AGAIN" SHOWCASES DYNAMIC VOCALS FROM MC AS WELL AS A SEXY HORN ARRANGEMENT. "STAY THE NIGHT" IS AUDIBLY SPECTACULAR!(DA BOMB) C0-WRITTEN BY KANYE WEST HAS A TEENA MARIE LIKE STYLE, MC'S VOCAL POWER SHOOTS THROUGH THE ROOF ON THIS ONE. "CIRCLES" "JOYRIDE" AND "FLY LIKE A BIRD" ARE UNLIKE ANYTHING I'VE EVER HEARD. THIS CD WILL DEBUT AT #1 AND WILL STAY THERE FOR QUITE SOMETIME....IF YOU HAVEN'T ADDED THIS CD TO YOUR COLLECTION....DO SO...AND YOU TOO WILL EXPERIENCE THE HYPE!!!

    Mariah is Back

This album passed my expectations. Many of the tracks are up beat dance tracks and basically make you feel good. The best tracks in my opnion are WE BELONG TOGETHER and Shake it Off. A strong cd,probably her best in years. A must have for Mariah fans, and a good record for R&B lovers.

    yawn.

OK, if you haven't heard Mariah screaming "sweet sweet honey honey lover lover oooo ooo ooo" over a tired sampled beat just enough, feel free to waste your money on this tripe. But otherwise, just flush your money down the toilet...it'll be cheaper, sound about as pleasant and won't contribute to the bank account of a spoiled, obnoxius, past-it skank.

2 1/2 out of 5 stars. The album is overrated :(

Sorry Mimi, Mariah, MC, or whatever you call yourself. Lambs overhyped this album to be the comeback album of the year. It ain't happenin'. It may be her own personal comeback but the music is still the same dull, dry, whiny, whispery, screeching singing she has been known for on Charmie, and Glitter. I was underwhelmed by the lackluster songwriting. She is literally screaming in this album and it gets annoying after the first listen. I don't know who she is listening to, but she is getting bad advice in her singing and her voice is raspy, straining, and ruined. Sure she'll open at number one, then plummet in sales and in chart position with this one. It's not universal and is mock r&b at best. Stick to your pop Mimi. That's what you're best at and stop trying so hard to be the r&b Queen you are not. Faith Evans album runs circles around The Emancipation.

Where, Oh where, has my Mariah gone?

I miss old school Mariah! There was so much hype promoting this album that Mariah was back...but she isn't. I am craving some Daydream and MusicBox days. It's not that I don't like R&B or hip-hop...but her breathy voice just doesn't lend itself that way. Sorry girl...but you're not 19 anymore...Bring back what you were created to do!

    THE VOICE IS BACK!

All of Mariah Carey's true fans have been anxiously awaiting this album. We all knew and she wouldn't dissapoint us. This is by far the best album I have heard in a long time. Its nice to find an album that you don't have to skip over songs that suck. I just listen to the whole cd through. I especially love her new single "we belong together." I love how Mariah really puts her heart into her songs. Most of her songs are the things that she have dealt with. Whats amazing to me is how she writes her own music. I can't believe she still has material that she can think of after all this years. This proves that she is truly is an amazing song write and an even more amazing singer! Bottm line, if you like Mariah Carey you will love this cd!
