Children's LiteratureDori is fascinated about stories of Oz, but her sister, Em, is skeptical until they are swept off their feet in a tornado and land in Oz—just like their Aunt Dorothy. They first encounter vain unicorns that demand to be groomed daily and a group of children held captive to do just that. Em and Dori devise a plan to escape and rescue a boy who also refused to cater to their whims. He leads them to the Princess Glenda who has been deprived of her wits by Bastina, the niece of the late Wicked Witch. The two sisters become separated but through their own cleverness and bravery, and Dori's knowledge of Oz, they manage to encounter strange creatures (Bungle, the glass cat; Jack Pumpkinhead; Scraps, the patchwork girl), trick the flying monkeys and lizard guards, escape from the Wicked Witch's tower, recover the magic wand, and restore the rulers' intelligence. 2005, A Byron Preiss Book/HarperCollins Publishers, and Ages 9 to 13.
