    My Sanctuary?

This book helped me make some minor changes in my home after I bought it. For example, I have a small room that serves as the entry way to my home. I have a very hectic worklife (as does everyone) and need to feel home is my sanctuary. The entry way room into the house each night was cold and in disarray and made me feel even more overwhelmed and stressed with my life. I used tips on function and the emotional effects of color, texture, light, and organization discussed in the book. I eliminated those items that did not belong or contribute to the function of welcoming me and my guests into the home. I painted the walls with a warm, welcoming color and improved the lighting in the room with warm incandescent lighting. I purchased a small wood cabinent with small drawers for keys and other items that are a must for this area. I added soft welcoming cushions on the cold seats meant for putting on and taking off boots and shoes. I made many other small changes. The effect in the room was so soothing. Now the room is not only functional but the entry way welcomes me home and I say, 'Ah, it's good to be home!'

Turns Your Home Into a Friend

My mother taught me that it is okay to have many best friends, and I do I have one who is really good for talking to about business, another for creative ideas, one to plan great dinner parties with, and another to share the fun and scary stuff about being in love. This book helped me turn my home into the space equivalent of having all my best friends around. It explained how different rooms care for different parts of my life and made me realize that, like friendship, my home was in it for the long haul. I could take my time to make plans and savor the process, just like having tea on the veranda.
