Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Christensen
Children can learn about the Empire State Building, one of New York City's most famous landmarks, in this informative book. Bullard focuses on innovations in construction and architectural design that helped make this skyscraper the tallest structure for over forty years. Black-and-white photos tell the story of its construction, showing the use of labor-saving devices like railroad cars to haul supplies right inside the building, as well as the people who helped to build the structure (many who worked without safety nets or ropes). Color photographs show several views of the building as it stands today. Textboxes add interesting information and provide captions for the many pictures. The text is simple to understand and printed in a large type, making it easy for new readers to decipher. Colored text is occasionally used to highlight important phrases or information. Special features include a map, a page of fun facts, a glossary, an index, and a bibliography of both print and Internet sources. The map shows the New York City area, with major landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and of course, the Empire State Building marked. Two smaller insets also show the city's location within the state of New York and the state in relation to the United States. This book is a good choice for a unit on architecture and for students writing school reports. Reviewer: Heather Christensen

Gr 2-4–These attractive books use high-quality photos, illustrations, maps, and diagrams to take students to some of America's most famous landmarks, providing information about the history, construction, and significance of each one. Two or three sentences per page are overlaid on full-page, captioned images. The texts conclude with a “Fun Facts” page. Readers will enjoy learning about our famous sites and the challenges of building and maintaining large structures, making the series a good choice.
