Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

This reasonably priced volume would entice just about anyone to learn about history owing primarly to the 2000 gorgeous photographs taking up the larger part of each page. The mostly black-and-white photos are arresting portraits and scenes in the categories of science (first in vitro baby), technology (Tommy gun), religion (Mormon family), daily life (early supermarket), politics (Kennedy, full page), the arts (Ulysses published), and sports (a team of the Negro League). Few of the photos are violent, and they are predominantly Anglo-American, but they also include India and South Africa. The 6000-entry chronology is in strips along the tops and bottoms of the pages and in 300 spotlight articles. The index makes it easy to find any particular image, while an accompanying DVD offers 20,000 additional pictures for added value and browsing pleasure. Famous stock-photo company Getty Images is teamed here with text from the equally famous Encyclopaedia Britannica. In a time of rapidly changing media, this work keeps both names in the public eye.

A captivating title - it says it all and encapsulates the theme of the book.

A fascinating and absorbing book. It's one of those great coffee table books that can be picked up and put down at any time with no fear of "losing the thread". The other neat attribute is that if one wants or needs to focus on a particular year in history or era, it's very easily accessbile.

Highly recommended for all ages and a MUST for anyone remotely interested in history.
