Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
With content derived from De Vito's World Atlas of Dog Breeds, this pocket encyclopedia for breeders, trainers, and dog lovers highlights, in a spread each (except for the dachshund, which gets four pages), the most popular breeds as recognized by international kennel clubs. Each profile contains breed facts: country of origin, height, weight, coat, color, alternate names, and registries. This technical information is offset by a description of the breed's history and personality and then a section providing specific information on exercise, training, grooming, and health. These well-organized narrative sections focus on information that prospective pet owners in particular will want to know, such as how well a breed plays with children, exercise requirements, and propensity for barking. At the head of each profile is a color-coded bar that indicates the dog's breed type as laid out in the book's opening chapter; because several of the colors used are similar, this feature is not as helpful as the rest of the profile. The book also suffers slightly from typos and text-wrapping issues and lacks a glossary covering health concerns, but these are not enough to be real detriments to its usefulness. BOTTOM LINE Overall, this attractive and versatile resource for professionals and dog lovers alike will be as much at home in the circulating collection as on the reference shelf.—Kara Schaff Dean, Needham P.L., MA

    Pictures too small and unclear

Not only can you not see the tiny pictures clearly enough to see what the dog looks like, you cannot change the size by pinching or spreading your fingers.
