Overview

Experience the great wars of history and the weapons used to fight them.

The Encyclopedia of War & Weaponry tells the story of warfare from ancient times to the present day. There are entries about knights, samurai warriors, cavalry charges, firearms, ships and laser-guided "smart" bombs-all described in A-Z entries. Colorfully illustrated full-page features show how military technologies have developed through the centuries-from armor, swords, and firearms to aircraft, satellites, and missiles. The Encyclopedia offers a Chronology of history's battles and wars along with a reference Dictionary of Military Leaders.

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 6-9-What might have been a useful reference tool succumbs to a jumbled, busy layout. The book opens with an excellent time line outlining 6000 years of conflict divided into 11 ages and periods. The alphabetical entries that follow are accurate, but often too brief to avoid gaps in the information presented. Topics of special interest are shaded in gray and included under their appropriate alphabetical section (for example, "Armor" is in the A's), but often come in the middle of other entries (e.g., "Armor" splits the article on the "Anglo-Afghan Wars" into two sections). In addition, these special topics are not always in strict alphabetical order. The entry on "Horse" appears between "Heavy Artillery" and "Helicopter." The colorful format incorporates three or four columns, margin sidebars, and two to six captioned photos, reproductions, and drawings per spread. The inside margins are very narrow, making the text difficult to read. Thumbnail biographies are provided in a four-page "Dictionary of Military Leaders." A poorly organized, poorly designed volume.-Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
