Library Journal
Researchers delving into the enormous wealth of published information on World War II will be deeply grateful for the publication of this monumental five-volume work. Tucker (military history, retired, Virginia Military Inst.) has edited numerous other encyclopedias, including works on the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and general military history. In turning his immense editorial talents to the largest of all 20th-century wars, he has produced a tour de force. The 1500-plus alphabetical entries, which vary in length from a paragraph to several pages and each conclude with a short bibliography, have been crafted by a host of eminent military scholars. Topics include battles, events, equipment, and subcategories of military endeavor, such as medicine and athletics, as well as entries for each of the world's countries and regions involved in the war; Axis as well as Allied concerns are covered. Bottom Line The result is an exceptional reference tool that easily transcends recent one-volume works, such as Michael Haskew's The World War II Desk Reference, and in many instances provides more depth than David T. Zabecki's two-volume World War II in Europe: An Encyclopedia and Stanley Sandler's World War II in the Pacific: An Encyclopedia. Very highly recommended for all libraries that can afford the price.-Ed Goedeken, Iowa State Univ. Lib., Ames Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
