Overview

A New York Times bestseller, the explosive and heartbreaking memoir from the widow of Mark Madoff and the daughter-in-law of Bernard Madoff

When the news of Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme broke, no one was more shocked than the members of his own family. Before then, Madoff’s son, Mark, and daughter- in-law, Stephanie, had built an idyllic life. Yet, while Mark’s thriving business was entirely separate from his father’s now notorious fund, he and Stephanie found themselves in the eye of the storm—and grappling with their own sense of betrayal. Mark refused to see or speak to his parents, and on the second anniversary of his father’s arrest, he hanged himself.

Left to raise her children as a single mother, Stephanie tells the real story of her marriage to Mark, of being a part of the Madoff family, and of life for two years following her father-in-law’s arrest and incarceration. The End of Normal is a searing inside look at one of the most controversial stories of our time, and an extraordinary memoir of surviving personal tragedy amid public scandal.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"[An] explosive memoir...[Madoff Mack] reveals what it was like to marry into the Madoff family and how she coped when it imploded." -People

"[P]erhaps the most truly 'insider' account of Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme to date...engrossing from the start...Madoff Mack's account contains personal details that make the book worth reading....[F]ascinating."
-Clare O'Connor, Forbes

"[A] moving and revealing memoir...Stephanie finally tells her side of the story."
-Nanette Varian, MORE.com

"The End of Normal gives an intimate account of Mark Madoff's two years of torment over the infamous swindle that wiped out thousands of investors and-by his wife's account-left him a man broken beyond repair."
-Tom Hays, Associated Press

"This is a love story wrapped up in a news story, and that's tricky to tell, because there is a really deep bond between these two people, Stephanie and Mark....Stephanie is just coming forward because she wants people to hear her, and her husband's, version of what their life has been. It's as pure and as simple as that."
-Chris Cuomo, ABC's 20/20

“The End of Normal is a riveting account of life inside the Madoff family as it self-destructed. Stephanie tells her personal story with stark candor and startling courage, and in the face of tragedy, she exudes an undaunted spirit for the sake of her children. This is a heartbreaking tribute to a beloved husband, and a stunning read.” -Linda Fairstein, New York Times bestselling author of Night Watch

“[A] painfully revealing memoir.” -New York Times

This book was so personal and told in such a touching way from a wife, mother, daughter-in-law and unfortunately, young widow. I found every word she wrote to be believable and told out of a great love for her husband.

This is truly a story of love, heart-break, and tragedy. Stephanie shares her experience with a rawness and authenticity rarely found in non-fiction. I highly recommend. It is riveting. You feel in the moment as you read.

This book was well-written and felt honest. I applaud the author for being forthcoming and opting to tell a side of the Madoff tragedy that has been repeatedly downplayed in the media circus. This book was hard to put down. Hopefully, it will remind people of the other true losses that Bernie caused - the ones that do not begin with a dollar sign. Even though the financial losses were horrific, the toll on innocent people was much worse.

This book gives a different insight into the devastation that media and public perception can bring. It was a courageous step to share these events and hopefully it will remind people that things arent always how they seem.

I read this book with trepidation. It tells the story of a man with no conscience who had everyone fooled for a very long time. I have doubts that Mrs. Madoff wasn't aware of goimngs on but I believe the assertion that Mark & Andy were not aware. If you want to get the basic info on this story I recommend you read it.

I thoroughly loved this book. Yes, it was sad but I really felt like I was listening to a best friend while reading this. The book is very well written and gives the reader a detailed look into the Madoff's privileged life. Stephanie's portrayal of Ruth and Bernie Madoff is so eerie and I felt sick when she described how unemotional and remorseless they both were prior, during, and after the scandal broke. Very tragic story but I think she did a beautiful job of writing a book that her children can be proud of after all they have been through.

A story of how often in life, things are not exactly as they appear. I am impressed by this woman for surviving so much, maintaining her voice and sharing her painful truth with readers.

I was an absolute awe of this book! It's a terrible tragedy, but so beautifully written. I couldn't put this book down. I hope Stephanie writes more in the future.

This well laid out and not tabloid fodder of pretend reality. It's about relationships, tragedy, and putting the pieces back together. It's not how the ponzi scheme worked or why Bernie Madoff did what he did. I believe anyone who has had a tragedy happen in their lives will relate to this book. It is sooo not about the money; it is life's tragic turns that leave you reeling and totally unprepared for the ricochete.

I couldnt put this book down. It was so sad that any woman would give birth only to watch her family crash and burn. Well written and fast moving. I hope to read that one day she will find happiness.
