Overview

This book analyses the transformation of English football in the 1990s. In so doing, it provides a comprehensive account of football culture in contemporary Britain that not only contributes to the study of the sport but also sheds light more widely on recent transformations in British society.

Although it draws on past writings on football, the book's scope and analytic focus are original to the sociology of football. Sociological studies of football in the past either have tended to focus on hooliganism or have been broad social or economic histories, and no book has examined the specific changes of the 1990s in the depth and breadth that this one does.

Analyzes the transformation of English football culture in contemporary Britain, shedding light on recent changes in British society. Through examination of the political economy of football since the 1960s and the public debates on reform from the mid-1980s, the author situates the transformation of the sport in the 1990s in the context of the collapse of the Keynesian, post-war settlement and the emergence of a Thatcherite, post-Fordist settlement.
