If there were any lingering doubts that Ian Bostridge is the most intelligent and musical English tenor to have emerged since the incomparable Ian Partridge, then his new EMI anthology, THE ENGLISH SONGBOOK, should finally dispel them. In a splendidly chosen program that runs the gamut from the Victorian worthies Stanford and Parry to younger masters like Gerald Finzi, Bostridge gives the clearest possible indication of the depth and range of English art song, to say nothing of its unmistakable charm. Best of all is the little sequence of songs by Roger Quilter, including the once enormously popular "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal," but the Gurney, German, and Warlock items...

In a splendidly chosen program that runs the gamut from the Victorian worthies Stanford and Parry to younger masters like Gerald Finzi, Bostridge gives the clearest possible indication of the depth and range of English art song, to say nothing of its unmistakable charm. Best of all is the little sequence of songs by Roger Quilter, including the once enormously popular "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal," but the Gurney, German, and Warlock items are no less enchantingly done. In fact, after hearing the recital -- which I did three times at a single sitting -- you wish the singer would now record an album devoted to each of the 14 composers represented here. That's how fabulously good THE ENGLISH SONGBOOK is.

[Bostridge] is not merely a well-suited singer but an artist who brings wonderfully complete responsiveness to both words and music. The haunted desolation of Delius’s "Twilight Fancies" is perfectly caught in the pale hue of the voice which can nevertheless give body and intensity to the frank cry of desire, calming then to pianissimo for the last phrase amid the dim echoes of hunting horns in the piano part.
