Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
In 1962 three prisoners escaped from Alcatraz; their fates are still unknown. This book, part of the "Unsolved Mysteries" series, explains how the convicts planned and executed their escape and what might have happened to them. It delves into the history of Alcatraz: how it evolved from a fortress into a maximum-security prison, and how massive construction and security systems were built into its architecture. The gruesome conditions inside the prison are not whitewashed, and neither are the case histories of the inmates. Readers will learn about murders, bloody fights, and drownings, not to mention serial killers and vicious racists. There is no redemption in the pages of this book. The examination of the 1962 escape, and the photographs of the evidence, is impressive. The event is not sensationalized; instead, the facts are carefully presented. The aftermath of the escape—what might have happened to the prisoners—is also dealt with in a serious, non-melodramatic fashion. All of the various scenarios are presented, and defenders and detractors of each are given their say. At the back of the book are a number of additional resources, including a list of tools used by the convicts and the FBI, a timeline of the history of Alcatraz and a glossary. The research that went into this book is excellent, and footnotes are provided to document some of the material. The book could have benefitted from additional editing (the first section, which describes the escape, is saturated with cliches, and the font used for the chapter headers is a little too whimsical for this kind of material). For readers who want to learn about this super-prison and the famous escape, this book fits the bill. Adults could use the book to promote discussion with children on criminals and the prison system.
