The essence of the Bhagavad Gita is a very important book for anyone who is a sincere truth-seeker. No matter what your religious background is, what your spiritual path is or what your practices and beliefs are. The Bhagavad Gita, although is considered the Bible of the Hindus, talks about deep truths that speaks to the entire humanity. The universal teachings of this book crosses all geographical, cultural, racial and time barriers. Truth is the same for all human kind, for all of God's creation and doesn't change with time. The gita was originally written some 5000 years ago and it is amazing how very relevant this book is, how practical. Something to note however is that there have been innumerous translations and explanations of this great book, originally written in sanskrit around 2000 BC by Veda Vyasa of ancient India. The Essence, explained by the great self-realized master Paramahansa Yogananda, and penned by his great disciple Swami Kriyananda, is a true masterpiece! It's simple, easy to understand yet deep and profound explanations of the great scripture brings the teachings perhaps, for the first time, in a form that can be easily understood and put to practise by the truth-seekers all over the world today. The teachings that are brought to us are no longer abstract and beyond our reach, but are very real, vibrating with the direct experiences of teachings actually lived. A truly remarkable book! An absolute essential for the beginner seeker or the experienced yogi. (Yoga means union union with God or the Absolute Truth. Hence a yogi is anyone who is committed on the path of knowing the Truth. The paths maybe as varied as each of us are but they all lead to the Same One. The popular version of the word yoga really means Hatha Yoga or yoga postures and may or may not, depending on one's inclinations, have anything to do with yoga.) This a book that should be read by one and all for a greater understanding of the meaning and purpose of life, of how to live this life so as to attain ever- lasting joy, no matter what circumstances we might find ourselves in and the final, inevitable destiny that we all share, no matter who we are, as we begin to understand the true nature of ourselves.

This is really one of my absolute top choice "desert island" books, probably second only to Autobiography of a Yogi. It seems that absolutely every aspect of the spiritual path is covered here, and as always, Swami Kriyananda's masterful presentation of his guru's teachings are a joy to read. Read this book if you want to learn the true, practical, spiritual application of the Bhagavad Gita.

Having read other books on the Gita, I have often been left more perplexed than clear. Truly the Gita stands among the greatest Scriptures written, yet much of it remained beyond my direct understanding. Swami Kriyananda has delivered the most joyful and insightful experience within the pages of the Essense of the Bagavad Gita. My intuitive understanding has been expanded... my heart opened... and I have finally received all from the wisdom of the Gita so well articulated in this great work. I bow humbly to you Swami Kriyanada.

This book is spiritually thrilling! It's the most inspiring book I've read since Autobiography of a Yogi. Where Autobiography fills you with inspiration, The Essence of the Bhagavad Gita shows you how to proceed. If you are a spiritual neophyte or if you have been practicing meditation and yoga for years, this book will overflow you with inspiration, clear practical guidance, and hope like never before. I read a little every night before retiring and smile in spirit as I drift into sleep. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

A very readable version of this great scripture of India. Kriyananda's understanding of Yogananda's explanations is presented in a style that not only gives deep inspiration but also provides the keys to practical application of these timeless truths.

The Gita contains the distilled essence of religious practice. Too bad that all of the interpretations, so far, have been hemmed-in by the culture of India. Or, they've been so poetically terse or scholarly dry as to obscure their practical application. I think of this book as an 'American Gita' because it's just incredibly readable, continually interesting, and wonderfully plainspoken. It never talks down or becomes hazy or heavy, but speaks to the reader as a friend. I'm familiar with Yogananda, how he said of these Gita interpretations that millions would 'find God through this book -- not thousands. Millions! I know, I have seen it!' This book has that kind of power. Reading it, one feels in touch with a sacred dispensation. It is a blessing to hold it in one's hands. Doubly amazing, then, that it is so open-hearted, joyous, and humanly compassionate. This is religion freed from old forms of doctrinal rigidity and sectarian hate it's religion that speaks to the individual seeker directly - thatt calls to the human heart to form a direct, personal relationship with God. Best of all, it reveals the practical steps to that inner communion. I say thank heaven for Kriyananda and his Guru, Paramhansa Yogananda. They have left us a gift of great value.

OK, I've read other spiritual works, & even other commentaries on the Gita. This one tops them all. Kriyananda knows what he's talking about--when he explains Yogananda's commentaries, you get it. Spirituality comes alive! I rate this up there with Autobiography of a Yogi.

While there are many 'Essence of the B.G' books, this one contains the inspiration and wisdom of a world renowned teacher, Paramhanas Yogananda. Written by his direct disciple, popular author and composer, and founder of Ananda Sangha worldwide, Swami Kriyananda, this Essence shines with clarity, wisdom, and practicality. It will appeal especially to sincere seekers and also meditators or potential meditators. This is it! Accept no substitutes. This book can change your life.
