Overview

THE ESSENTIAL ANNE BRONTË contains both novels completed by Anne Brontë during her short life: AGNES GREY and THE TENANT OF WILDFELL HALL.

AGNES GREY follows the precarious life of a young governess as she lives with and works for several wealthy English families. Set in the mid-nineteenth century, the novel reflects the author's own experiences working as governess during the Victorian era.

THE TENANT OF WILDFELL HALL is the second and final novel by Anne Brontë. The novel follows a woman who leaves her abusive, alcoholic husband, and who must then support herself and her young son.

About the Author

Anne Brontë (1820-1849) was the youngest of three Brontë sisters. Born to a poor Irish clergyman in the Church of England, Anne Brontë attended a few years of boarding school and worked as a governess between 1839 and 1845. Brontë wrote two novels in the late 1840s, AGNES GREY and THE TENANT OF WILDFELL HALL; both were well-received. She died of tuberculosis at the age of 29.
