Overview

Excepting a few years with Mercury at the beginning of their career, Flatt & Scruggs made all of their studio recordings for Columbia. This double-disc set is the most useful survey of their work for the label, spanning 1950 to 1969, and throwing in three unreleased tracks along the way. In addition to the expected sterling bluegrass, it has their occasional commercial breakthroughs ("The Ballad of Jed Clampett," "Petticoat Junction," and the version of "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" that was used as the theme to Bonnie and Clyde). Curiosity seekers will also be impressed by their cover of Bob Dylan's "Down in the Flood," recorded in late 1967, and unreleased by Dylan himself until The Basement Tapes.

Flatt and Scruggs are still considered by many to be THE bluegrass band. Earl Scruggs defined the role of the banjo in bluegrass music and Lester Flatt was a peerless vocalist. As ambassadors of the form, the duo made appearances on rural TV comedies like The Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction. Their theme songs for the shows and a few others up the corn pone and novelty quotient to where I docked this collection a star. With only slightly more than 80 minutes, Columbia could have dug deeper into the catalog and added some lesser known gems. Until they do that and drop some of the hayseed stuff, this seems to be the best Flat and Scruggs Columbia collection around.

This compendium of Flatt & Scruggs music is an essential element to any Blue Grass collection. They defined the genre during the 50's and 60's.
