Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
It's not often you get to see a complete analysis of an industry as high-profile as wireless communications -- without paying thousands of dollars to some analyst of questionable objectivity, that is. So if you're a marketing professional, investor, manager, PR person, or business decision maker concerned with wireless, The Essential Guide to the Business of U.S. Mobile Wireless Communications qualifies as something of a miracle.

John P. Burnham's day job is strategic planning for a major electronics company. So he knows this stuff. And he's covered the waterfront here: voice, data, paging, infrastructure, platforms, devices, applications, even service providers -- those still standing, that is. There's coverage of voice, data, and paging; consumer and business services; TDMA and CDMA; even some pretty educated guesses about the I-Mode, 3G, GPRS, EDGE, and CDMA2000 stuff that's allegedly around the corner.

Burnham takes on the big questions: which technologies will predominate? Where will the revenue come from -- and where won't it come from? What can be expected from "location-based" services? You're unlikely to find this much insight elsewhere -- for ten, maybe even 50 times the price. (Bill Camarda)

Preface

Preface

The excitement surrounding the mobile wireless communications industry is palpable and well deserved. At its bedrock, the industry rests on the three fundamental growth drivers of the U.S. economy—digitalization, the speed and power of information processing, and mobility. The mobile wireless communications industry is extremely large and has experienced tremendous growth, with new capabilities being developed and brought to market on an almost daily basis. This growth should be expected to continue for the foreseeable future.

The increase in personal capability enabled by being in constant, untethered communication, as well as having access to virtually any piece of data, from almost anywhere, is unparalleled. Personal capability will continue to expand well into the future, as it is still the early innings of the wireless revolution.

However, there is a tremendous amount of hype surrounding mobile wireless communications. Upon close examination, there remain substantial technical and financial hurdles that must be cleared. While these issues will ultimately be solved, it will take longer than many believe and there will be plenty of casualties along the way.

When an industry has the size and growth trajectory of mobile wireless communications, one would expect the major players to be very profitable. However, due to challenging structural issues, many segments of the industry are unprofitable. The structural issues in mobile wireless communications may well lead to a profitless prosperity, where growth rates are high, but acceptable financial returns are hard to come by.

This book seeks to provide the business professional, investor, or curious soul a clear and concise explanation of the mobile wireless communications industry and its features, supported by facts and figures. It will provide an understanding of the key technologies without being a technical treatise, and will attempt to separate the hype from the realistic business prospects for the major market segments, sometimes with surprising results.

The different segments of the mobile wireless communications market are remarkably different, as are their competitive intensities and business prospects. This text will help to identify the most promising areas and the areas where the risks are high, despite phenomenal growth rates.

As with any endeavor, caution and close study are well advised. This text is designed to help in this effort. As a further note of caution, the mobile wireless communications industry is changing with increasing velocity, and while every effort has been made to ensure this text is accurate and up to date, changes in the industry can overtake the content of this text, and recalibration is strongly advised before taking any action.
