The Essential John Denver

( 6 )

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - James Christopher Monger
There is no shortage of excellent John Denver compilations, and RCA Legacy's two-disc Essential John Denver collection doesn't disappoint. All of the hits are here "Rocky Mountain High," "Calypso," "Back Home Again," "Annie's Song," "Perhaps Love," etc., and the sequencing is linear and concise. Fans looking for a more diminutive yet equally satisfying overview should check out 2005's Definitive All-Time Greatest Hits, but for the discerning listener looking to capture the full scope of the late country-pop great, this rich slab of history will more than suffice.

    soothing

I had forgotten how soothing JD's voice was until I saw his concert on PBS. Then I realized that I HAD to have one of his CDs. I researched to find the one CD that had the most of his best works and this is the one.

    Loved It!

This album is a fine compilation of John Denver hits and some more or less-known singles (or B-Sides). The sound quality is all redone, so it doesn't sound like white noise in the background or any imperfectious-sounding material. A must-have for John Denver fans and first time listeners too!

    Essential, but flawed

As a long, long-time John Denver fan, I was intrigued by the release of this CD and bought it because I think I've finally gotten over the fact that he's gone. And for the most part the CD is great. But I can't figure out why these particular Leaving On A Jet Plane and Poems and Prayers and Promises tracks were chosen. Both sound like they were remixed in a karaoke bar with percussion that is embarrassing and Poems and Prayers sounds like Denver is continually racing to catch up to the beat. If i could find a way to contact the producers, I would because if new listeners buy this CD and judge it by the first two songs, they won't make it to the third. What a travesty in judgement. He recorded much better tracks of both songs and its disappointing that these two were chosen to lead off.
