All Music Guide - Richie Unterberger
By the time this two-CD, 40-track anthology hit the stores in 2004, consumers had a wide choice of Johnny Mathis compilations that contained his biggest hits in variable surroundings, ranging from succinct single-disc collections to box sets. This one does have all of the major late-'50s/early-'60s hits you'd expect of anything with "essential" in its title, although -- in an effort to make this a career-spanning selection -- the entirety of disc two is devoted to his post-1970 work, when Mathis was a run-of-the-mill adult contemporary singer (albeit one who did return briefly to the top of the charts in 1978 via his duet with Deniece Williams, "Too Much, Too Little,...

Still, disc one does have a lot of Mathis' best songs, and some of the most popular make-out music of all time.

Mathis is More than The Essential-He's a Must!

The 'rules' here do not apply for me when it comes to anything Johnny Mathis sings live and or all of his massive recorded music! "The Essential Johnny Mathis," is just a form of the now day title for this superlative compilation because if you see and or hear him sing anything at all you will KNOW with rapid heartbeats what class, lush, plush, sensual, chic, one-of-a-kind, means. The mold was broken when he arrived on a beautiful September Morn, a gifted babe who was pre-destined to become a richly deserved American Living Singing Legend. Every song he sings is Essentially a Must to all of those who have made the spectacular, "Mathis Connection." Thank you Johnny Mathis, thank you so much for every single note, with love never-ending!

Don't believe a word of Ungetmeyer!

This is the album with "BRAZIL" and "99 MILES" and all those glorious seldom-heard gems...I cry everytime I hear the 50's - 60's Mathis love songs and chart tunes, but it is so refreshing to hear that one-of-a-kind God-given voice on newer and different selections. There is only ONE Johnny Mathis [just like there is only ONE Tony Bennett] and we should cherish each treasure each of them records [or perform live] while they are still able to sing at the top of their game. If you love music - MATHIS IS ESSENTIAL
