Author George Beahm has set himself the task of providing a guide to the often bewildering array of books, encyclopedias, DVDs, audio recordings, artwork, collectibles and merchandising devoted to the marvellous world and creations of JRR Tolkien. This book covers all of these and more allowing the Tolkien fan - both old hand and novice alike - to make an informed choice between the items which are essential and those which are frivolous. Which edition of The Hobbit is best? Where can you buy a version of Lord of the Rings which is just an inch thick? What are the role-playing games like? What weapon replicas are available? The Essential Tolkien Sourcebook provides the answers. Don¿t think this is just a dry list of facts and figures: throughout Beahm brings his usual style and wit making for a very enjoyable read. The book is illustrated by Colleen Doran whose lush pencil style brings Tolkien¿s words to life. Beahm includes interviews with Doran and many of the other artists, such as Michael Whelan and Tim Kirk, who have interpreted the world of Middle Earth over the years. I found this book thoroughly absorbing and recommend it most highly to any Tolkien fan.
