All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Columbia/Legacy's 2001 release The Essential Kenny Loggins lives up to its billing, and not just because it has all of Loggins' solo hits. No, this collection earns its title because it contains no less than seven Kenny-fronted Loggins & Messina tracks, along with all his big solo hits, plus a sharp selection of album tracks and latter-day material, for a grand total of 35 tracks over two CDs. That's a lot of material, and many listeners may find that they are drawn to the first disc, which truly captures him in his prime by spanning from "Your Mama Don't Dance" to the era just before "Footloose." Columbia/Legacy's 2001 release The Essential Kenny Loggins lives up to its billing, and not just because it has all of Loggins' solo hits. No, this collection earns its title because it contains no less than seven Kenny-fronted Loggins & Messina tracks, along with all his big solo hits, plus a sharp selection of album tracks and latter-day material, for a grand total of 35 tracks over two CDs. That's a lot of material, and many listeners may find that they are drawn to the first disc, which truly captures him in his prime by spanning from "Your Mama Don't Dance" to the era just before "Footloose." This is a compulsively listenable disc, from the sweet singer/songwriterisms of "Danny's Song" and "House at Pooh Corner" to the exquisitely crafted soft rock of "This Is It" and "Heart to Heart," two of the greatest singles of their kind. If the second disc isn't as good, it's largely because it's a mishmash of dated '80s productions and latter-career cultism; there's still good stuff here, but apart from the first six songs, it's for the serious fan. That, however, is not a criticism that can be lodged of The Essential Kenny Loggins as a whole, since it far exceeds any other compilation in its scope and its success, presenting all sides of this fine, mellow singer/songwriter. Plus, the first disc is a stellar listen in its own right.

    It's what's in the Performance!

If you have ever been present at a live performance with Kenny Loggins, you would unquestionably agree that you’ve just witnessed an unforgettable concert event. Loggins is a musical performer in the truest sense. The CD’s we may listen to are only a shadow of the command performance Loggins’ presents on stage. While performing in Phoenix, the city experienced a power outage. Within the darkened concert hall ushers held flashlights, spotlighting Loggins who then assembled the band and in the stillness of the crowd, played a two hour acoustic session. When the lights came on, he then played on for an additional hour. Having worked with many performers—without a doubt, Loggins’ response to this unexpected interruption demonstrated exceptional professionalism. A night to remember, to Kenny Loggins and the band, a personal thank you. Buy this CD… (Digially Remastered)

Over 40, straight, and still enjoy Loggins

For anybody that was breaking out of high-school and into college at the height of L&M, the Eagles, and the rest of the great 70's-early 80's groups, this is a must have. I drive 1 hour each way to work and a little Kenny Loggins sure takes the edge off a bad day. By the time I get home, there's no reason to kick the dog, lock the kids in the closet, or throw tuna helper noodles at the wife.

    Does life get any better?

I was having a bad day at work last summer when one of my "friends" decided to take me to dinner. I was really depressed cuz my last boyfriend, Chad, really broke my heart and I thought all was lost. But Danny took me out and showed me a GREAT time. The he took me back to his place and played me this Kenny Loggins CD. I was immediately hooked on both Danny and Kenny. Danny and I have been together for almost two years now and whenever Danny is away on business, I play "Danny's song" to remind me of my sweet Danny-Poo. This CD really helps show to all that there are great things in life- you just have to look for them.

Great collection, covers most of his career

If you're in the mood for some truly good music, this is the cd to get into. Kenny Loggins is the quintessential rock songwriter. Spanning from the early years with Loggins & Messina, this cd covers it all. His tracks like "Highway to the Dangerzone" and "Boot Scoot Boogie" get me so energized that I often go right to the gym afterwards. When I get home, I'll take a warm bath and slip into a pair of my satin panties. Then I kick back with some white zinfandel and rub oil on my chest. Following that, I retreat to my bedroom where I cry myself to sleep. Although Kenny Loggins' career has kind of dwindled since the late 80s plethera of soundtrack tunes, this cd is constant reminder that he was a strong contributor to pop music.
