There are several Michael Jackson greatest-hits compilations out there, each one its own take on what should be the definitive portrait of the gloved one's career. The Ultimate Collection, The Essential Collection (different from the one here), and Number Ones have all surfaced in 2003 and 2004, and HIStory a few years prior. Each one of these collections, while commendable in its attempt to thoroughly document Jackson's accomplishments, has fallen woefully short in one aspect or another. This has finally been rectified with this installment of Sony's outstanding Essential collection. Starting with his campaign with his brothers in the Jackson 5, this two-disc set tours through every important single and every important fan favorite short of including his duet with Paul McCartney on "Say Say Say" (the Beatle does, however, make an appearance here on "The Girl Is Mine"). From Off the Wall to Dangerous, it's all here in one concise package, making it the ideal reference point from which exploration into his deeper catalog can begin. While die-hard fans will already have every single song contained herein and may be weary to purchase another greatest-hits compilation short of a greatest-hits compilation including his backing vocals on Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me," this may be the only one fans and casual listeners will ever have to purchase to get their fill of the King of Pop's magic. [Epic/Legacy's Limited Edition 3.0 appeared in 2008 and included a bonus CD -- in addition to the original, two-CD set.]

I love Michael Jackson and I'm a HUGE fan. I've had this CD for a while and I listen to it constantly. There is no one as talented as Michael Jackson as far as I'm concerned!

Yay! Finally a compilation w/Michael's earliest hits w/the Jackson 5 all the way to 2001's "You Rock My World" that is only 2 discs! I hope everybody buys it!

All in all, its a quality collection of MJ's hits spanning from the infancy of his career up to the 90s. Most of the classics are on here, although there were a few I was disappointed to not find in the collection, but overall, a fairly good summary of his career

the essential michael jackson has one side which I play over and over again. The songs are entertaining, soothing, unique and thought=provoking. He was a charismatic, one of a kind performer who was affected severely by his dysfunctional family, but managed to rise above it to a degree to become a performer loved by many fans in the world, despite his eccentricities. His premature death must be investigated thoroughly, and those responsible held to justice. It is very sad he could not complete some of his comeback concerts. his legend will live on, despite the tarnished image associated with child abuse accusations. One of his accusers recently committed suicide. Michael should not have continued to have children overnight. He helped them in many ways, but his help was tarnished by extortion and accusations. HIs artistry will live forever, and he will be remembered until we all get swallowed by the great Neverland. Highy recommend this album.

There are so many great Michael Jackson songs and this is probably one of the best compliations I have seen. He was and will remain an great influence to music, entertainment, and the world. A must have for any Michael Jackson fan.

If you are a fan of the Jackson 5, the Jacksons and Michael Jackson, this 2 CD set is the best compilation spanning the hits of both his solo career and as well as the Jackson 5/Jacksons. The 5 CD Ultimate Collection contains a few hits that this one is missing, such as Dancing Machine & Mama's Pearl, but also contains many songs that were lesser known hits and one that only the most serious Jackson fan would have heard.

Every Michael Jackson song you would ever want except its missing his colaboration with his sister Janet from his HIStory CD called Scream. Thats the only one missed on essential.
