Barnes & Noble - Steve Futterman
They had the sound and they had the songs -- and the combination made them legends. The team of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel perfected a trademark approach that mated the duo's matchless vocal harmonies to Simon's poetic and eminently melodic tunes. The premier folk-rock act of their time, Simon & Garfunkel lasted a mere six years as a recording team; even so, the 33 tracks on the double-disc Essential provide all the proof necessary as to why they have maintained their unimpeachable stature. The premier folk-rock act of their time, Simon & Garfunkel lasted a mere six years as a recording team; even so, the 33 tracks on the double-disc Essential provide all the proof necessary as to why they have maintained their unimpeachable stature. Essential was released to coincide with the duo's 2003 reunion tour -- 32 years after their original breakup. Touching upon highlights of each of the S&G's five original albums, this sterling collection brings together every Top 100 song released by the pair, as well as live recordings and the 1975 reunion hit "My Little Town." In doing so, the scope of Simon's brilliant song craft, the longtime friend's one-voice harmonies, and the occasional performances that spotlighted their distinctive solo voices, are given full display. There have been other Simon & Garfunkel collections over the years, but few carry this condensed punch.
All Music Guide - Ted Mills
Eight years before the American side got their act together on The Best Of, the U.K. contingent of Columbia/Sony released this single-CD compilation of greatest hits. Of course, it's not totally definitive: "Kathy's Song" and "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her" are live versions from The Concert in Central Park. It does not have "Fakin' It" but does have "Seven O'Clock News/Silent Night." Still turning up in some discount bins, it's worth picking up. [In 2003 a greatly expanded two-disc version was released by Columbia.]

    The Majic is Restored

The pure sound and perfect harmony brings back all those wonderful memories in a time gone by. One can once again listen for hours on end and never tire of the beauty and meaning of these talented men.

    A Few Quibbles

There is nothing wrong with the performances on this collection. However,I think a running length of 97 minutes on two CDS is a bit skimpy. Sony coud have paid a few bucks to WB for some S&G versions of Paul Simon songs from the Reunion in the Park CD. Failing that, they could have taken tracks from solo Paul and Art albums up until My Little Town. That would have given a hint of why the duo parted ways.
