Highly recommend this book to any and all stay at home moms (or friends of stay at home moms who just want to get a more thorough understanding of just how hard SAHMs work). The author has clearly tested all of her methods and suggestions out on herself, and the fact that she's a clinical psychologist makes her methods even more reassuring. Well written, heartfelt at times, and most of all, practically useful for stay at home moms as they go about their days.

If you are wandering through those first hazy days of motherhood, or are a veteran mom (of 3 like me!), you can find loads of helpful hints in this book. I flipped directly to the chapters on housecleaning (7), notes to my rookie self (9), and the bonus chapter with tons of great kid activity ideas. Loved the relatable writing and excerpts from the author's own blog. Buy it! You won't regret it.

People constantly say kids don't come with instructions or a handbook. This book is that handbook we've all been looking for. This isn't like other books out there that say a lot but don't really say much and you're left looking for yet ANOTHER helpful book. Your search is over. Get this book and eliminate the other 6 unhelpful ones sitting on your shelf. The easy to navigate format means you can skip to the place you need to find answers for today, for right now. This book makes it easy to find situation-specific info with little effort and much reward. Give it a chance and make your life easier!

This book is absolutely awesome! I SO could have used the encouragement and practical ideas when I was first an at-home mom, full-time with my now-junior-higher, or even during my 6-wk maternity leave with my now-first-grader and then throughout the years of combining working outside the home with the job of mothering. Well, at least I can make good use of it NOW because, as Hyland-Tassava says in the book, the adjusting, the self-care concerns, the need for balance, etc. are ongoing.
I would recommend this book not ONLY for SAHMs, but also for working moms (because a good share of their time still involves mothering at home) AND for dads! The reframing advice for how we (individually and as a society) value parenting is "essential" indeed.
Most of all, this book is VALIDATING of the vast array of feelings experienced by moms (and often thought to be "only me"), empowering and strengthening, engaging (I can't put it down!), and infused with doses of humor. I could surf around the web and HOPE to find useful info, but I'd rather pick up a resource I know I can trust because the writer has not only mom experience but trained-psychologist experience too. And hey!--it's way cheaper than therapy!

The advice in this book is exactly the sort of thing I wish I'd heard when I became a SAH mother a few years ago. It reads like a cross between an instruction manual and a therapy session. The author feels like a friend. A smart one. The kind of friend all stay-at-home moms need.
I highly recommend it.

This book is awesome-- I agree with one of the other reviewers, it should be a must-read for Stay at Home Moms AND working moms (and dads), because it has so much great parenting advice.

I feel much better about taking advice from someone who not only lives and breathes motherhood for a living but is also a professional, a PhD no less. Seems more reliable than just any other person with an opinion and an Internet connection.

This book is very well written and organized to address the day-to-day issues which SAHMs have to handle. The author's expertise as a psychologist is perfectly matched to her own and others' experiences as stay-at-home mothers. I can't imagine anyone honestly finding it boring or irrelevant or unrealistic. The author seems like a thoughtful and open-minded neighbor who also has a relevant educational background.
Anyhow, if you're a SAHM or know someone who is a SAHM, I think you should get the book and judge its quality for yourself. I'm pretty confident you'll find it interesting, engaging, and useful.

I wish this guide would have been available to me. It would have made a huge difference. Now I can get for my daughter and leave this for those times I'm not around and she needs a light at the end of the tunnel.

This well-written book isn't your run-of-the-mill parenting or mothering manual. The author is a SAHM, an avid blogger, and a PhD psychologist with years of relevant practice under her belt. Not just a collection of anecdotes and commonplace advice, this book goes deep into health and wellness while also providing direct, humorous, and worthwhile advice about working as a stay-at-home mother.

I thought my mom could use some help and she did not disagree. She gave this a double thumbs up and I got a gold star :)

My wife and I just finished reading this book and Shannon's Blog posts and now consider it a "3rd Mom" to help us through what is a very challenging responsibility in these modern times where we work our fingers to the bone. A must have in that stack of parenting books on your nightstand! Thanks Shannon :)
Note: There's definitely a Troll poster that is obviously a very sad, lonely man that has something against this author. There are a string on 1-star reviews that add nothing to the discourse for parents and are just malicious in nature.

I loved this book for its witty observations about motherhood. Plus, it is an inexpensive gift for a new SAHM or, really, any type of mom.
I read through the reviews before posting this and I was a little shocked at the negative reviews. But, upon further reflection, it is clear that: 1) some of them are from people (or one person) who haven't read the book and 2) someone has an ax to grind. Books reviews aren't usually so cut-and-dried. Are you telling me that 9 people actually bought the e-book, read whole thing, and disliked all of it? Ignore the haters. This book is worth a read.

The author combines real-life "in the trenches" mothering experience with a PhD in psychology, which makes for a totally interesting and useful perspective on parenthood.

I loved this book! When the paper copy comes out I plan to buy several for gifts for SAHM friends. The author's writing style is friendly and conversational and kept me wanting to read on, even when the book ended! Maybe the author is working on a sequel???! Incidentally, I read all the previous reviews and I have to wonder whether some of the "one-star" reviewers even read the book, or at least the same book, that I read.

I would not recommend this book to anyone. It was so bad! I should have guessed from the reviews. Then I googled this author and read an equally unimpressive essay in some other book. Sounds like a catty, juvenile, bored stay at home mom who doesn't really enjoy staying at home all that much. Seems bitter and resentful. For a psychologist, she doesn't offer much professional contribution. The PhD is misleading.

Very disappointed. I had high expectations because of its "manual" title. Frankly, found it to be devoid of "voice" or personality. Very bland writing and lost interest. I guess just didn't hold my attention for very long. It's like a good skeleton, but missing the rest of the "stuff".

I just didn't find it very helpful. It was the same stuff I get other places online. Thought I'd find more specific, step-by-step, original stuff. Skip it.

This is one to be skipped. This author comes across somewhat passive aggressive and it appears she doesn't really like being a SAHM. There may or may not be eating disorder issues. Would not take any type of advice from this author at all.
