Sabatini is the master of adventure stories, but just as importantly he is a great developer of characters who have character.

I only had time to read one of the books in this anthology before receiving the request for a review, but that book alone is well worth the $1.05 (once you add tax) that you will spend for The Essential Works of Rafael Sabatini. The book I read was Captain Blood, which is an awesome pirate story set in the 1680s. As anyone who has seen the classic movie knows, Captain Blood was an innocent doctor practicing his profession in the West Country when he was falsely accused of treason in the aftermath of Monmouth's Rebellion and sold into slavery in the West Indies. He escapes and becomes a famous pirate. I highly recommend both book and movie, and I look forward to reading Sabatini's other books.
