Overview

"During the desperate times of the Depression era, two determined women, Lizzie Keith and Maggie Johnson, raise four children without the benefit of husbands and grapple with issues common to every woman: perseverance, acceptance, resourcefulness and resilience.

Lizzie believes that God had promised her a son, whom she will mold into a preacher. She pursues this goal at all costs to her children's welfare. Conversely, Maggie supports her children with loving encouragement. Lizzie's son, Benny, becomes a renowned piano-playing evangelist, but faces his mother's staunch scrutiny.

When young women from across the South and Midwest turn up dead with a curious symbol tattooed across their foreheads and a marked Bible passage in their laps after attending a Benny Keith revival meeting, the authorites begin to question Benny.

Leading up to this is a sometimes comical journey through the lives of these two Pentecostal west Texas families."
