    A very practical guide

In my opinion, this is a great book for parents of autistic children or anyone who supports or has contact with them. It gives insight into many different everyday situations and the challenges that parents can expect to encounter, as well as practical suggestions for working around them. Some will work some won't. Obviously it depends upon the child and the circumstance. I have lent my copy out to three other people to read, and they have all found it useful.

    more from this reviewer

While it's true and very real, Autism in being recognized more and more everyday.

Having 2 out of 3 of my children affected by Autism, this book is right on the button. Right down to the behaviours and the sensitities of an Autistic. This book will help you understand the complexities of Autism and give you insight to helping your child become more independent with their lives. Learning that your child has been diagnosed with Autism can be devistating, and not only for the parents, but for their siblings and other family members as well. A non-autistic child's first reactions is a reaction. Of what they see, feel, and hear. Some Autistic children only react on what they feel, and sometimes cannot, or will not react on what they hear or see. Learning the different ways of helping your Autistic child to acheiving what the non-autistic can so simply do (reactions to seeing, learning what is heard, and feeling what is seen and heard) will put you on the right track. Don't just give in on "pity" for the Autistic child, (they can do...if it is learned) instead, enter their world. Autism is a complexing disability, no two children have the same, equal charateristics (trust me...I know). My daughter and son are well on their way to becoming more and more independent thanks to early intervention and this book.
