    Surprising

I bought this book for a friend who is learning the game, but I started reading it and was shocked at its depth. It is billed as sort of an introductory book, but in a very systematic way it quickly leads you into some very advanced concepts. It is written in a disarmingly breezy style and is an easy read, but the ideas and the way they are presented are as good as I've read anywhere. The chapters on bluffing, betting, position, isolation, table image and player profiles are absolutely top notch. The fact that Johnny Quads is not only a top player and dealer but also a writer really comes through. As good as much more expensive tomes.

better than books twice the price

This book differs from others out there (and there are many) in that it is so systematic, taking a player from absolute square one all the way up to advanced play. It has a very breezy style with no extraneous material and is wide-ranging, delving into everything from home games to casino ring games, online poker and tournaments. Unlike so many other poker tomes, it doesn't downplay the psychological aspects at the expense of the mathematical. The chapters on betting strategy, tells, position, isolation, player profiling and table image are as good or better than anything on the shelves, by any player. Don't let the cover fool you. This is more than an introductory book.
