I loved this book! The characters are interesting and funny, while the plot is both entertaining and suspenseful. Definitely a fun, reality-based throwback to the 80s....

Los Angeles is the kind of city where each decade has its own real-life colorful characters, neighborhoods, history-making headlines, and the kind of diversity-filled events that beckons countless souls to head West ... not just from the square states, but from all over the world. In The Ex-Club Tong Pang, author Janis Hashe treats her readers to nothing less than the quirky sub-worlds and even quirkier characters of 1980's L.A. With humor, colorful settings, Koreatown culture, and highly memorable characters, we take an era-specific romp with the likes of struggling playwrite Hannelore, handsome Alec, mouthy boutique owner Bernice, and a slew of others -- both heroic and dastardly -- through a world of who-done-it and how-do-you-pronounce-that intrigue. A very fun read!

What a super escape! This is a delightfully offbeat snapshot of LA Intrigue, circa 1980s. As a life-long Angeleno, I seriously couldn't ask for a more clever, involving or knowing trek through 80s Los Angeles. The time spent with playwright Hannelore Herald, who doesn't miss a beat as she's swept up into the world of a tall, blonde stranger after the mysterious neighborhood Club Tong Pang puts up a "closed for business" sign, is such a fun and exciting romp, with just enough danger. I don't know which I enjoyed more, the marvelous, quirky characters, the insider visits to LA landmarks and ethnic neighborhoods, or the reminders of a pre-Starbucks era: frozen yogurt as a new fad, tape decks playing Michael Bolton, and a stuffed Kangaroo named Richard Dean Anderson. Alexander McCall Smith may have a handle on the heart of his lovely "No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" characters. But Janis Hashe has got the denizens of this particular SoCal scene completely in her pocket. Can't wait to see what Hannelore's up to next... and with whom.
