Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - RevaBeth Russell
Do kids even know they have an endocrine system? It is not the most obvious system of the body, but, after reading about these "glorious glands," the kids will know this system. This is another book in the "Body Buddies" series with characters such as Squirt and Cognos. Homeostasis is clearly explained, as are the pineal, hypothalamus, and pituitary glands. Since no gland or hormone stands alone, the reader learns how the heart, muscles, and bones work together with the endocrine glands. Malfunctioning glands are explained as in the case of diabetes. The reproductive glands are not talked about, making it safe for some families or schools for this age of student. Readers learn that endocrine glands, such as the thymus, help protect our bodies. Again, the cool factoids at the end of the book can be used to impress friends and family. Did you know that the average duration of a yawn is about 6 seconds? Each book also has a fun review page that would help children become better textbook readers. I'd love to see these books in elementary schools and I bet the children would also love to have them there. They would also be a great addition in special-needs classrooms.
