Children's Literature - Cathi I. White
Most people know some information about drugs, but may want to know more. We know that some drugs are dangerous, but how? We know that some can be addictive, but are they all? We know that some are more easily obtained than others, but why? There are many questions one can ask about drugs and this enlightening book seems to answer many of them. Readers will be informed about the different classifications of drugs such depressants, hallucinogens, inhalants, and stimulants. Some common drugs such as alcohol, sleeping pills, nicotine, and inhalants are discussed. In addition some other familiar but illegal drugs are presented such as cocaine, marijuana, heroin, date rape drugs, and morphine. The book details what each drug is, how it is obtained, medical uses, if any, how it works, and the danger of taking the drug. For example, some teens think that sniffing paint removers, cleaning aerosols, gasoline, and other inhalants are harmless. However, these inhalants slow the brain process, can cause brain, nerve, and organ damage in a single use, and can also cause the heart to beat so fast it results in death. Teens as well as adults need to be informed about drugs whether they seem harmless or not. This educational book would be excellent in a health or science classroom. Parents should read this book to become more knowledgeable about drugs in case their child or someone they know becomes involved with drugs. This book is part of "The Facts About Drugs" series.
