The Facts on File History of the American People

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-- Scott successfully recounts the history of the U. S. from the ``Wanderers and Settlers'' of the age of the Amerindians to the present-day nuclear age without eliminating or glossing over the dramatic sweep and grandeur of our nation's history. Major themes, personalities, and events are presented in a lively, highly readable, and almost novellike narrative that includes appropriate quotations from original sources, accompanied by captioned period illustrations, maps, and songs. Especially effective is Scott's inclusion of spreads that focus upon specific movements, people, and happenings; these extras help to give readers a better understanding of underlying historical motifs and forces in the American experience. Scott's interpretations are traditional and based upon his overall assumption that ``from the beginning this nation has struggled to define the meaning in its founding creed: that people possess an inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.'' While a lack of notes makes identification of sources difficult, Scott's title is fascinating reading. It will be an excellent reference source. --David A. Lindsey, Lakewood Junior/Senior High School, WA
