Societies in conflict with a few remarkable wrinkles

A compelling read. I found that I could not wait to see how the plot played out and the principal heroine managed to overcome all the obstacles before her. In addition to very insightful social commentary, the characters are believable and easy to identify with, and there are more than a few very surprising twists in store for the reader. The author paints a remarkably realistic picture of a fantasy world with compelling characters and a subtle trace of the irony underlying society.

    Interesting, fanciful, brutal

The peek into this crazy world, its unique subcultures, and the intrique that comes of it is a delight. Be prepared for a rush at the beginning that sweeps you into the story. I look forward to reading more from this author.

    Chapters out of chronologic order?

I bought this book and was thrilled to pieces to add another one of Wooding's books to my small collection only to be disappointed that the chapters are mostly out of order and it is very hard for me to follow what is even going on here...in the beginning, I'm reading a war between these two races of people and the main protagonist losing a loved one in the midst of battle. Then a few chapters later, I'm reading about her and her loved one (not dead!) and a son that was never really mentioned where the story began for me, all at some elegant ceremony for her son's graduation. I figured "okay, maybe this will make sense later. Maybe it's a memory." Boy, was I wrong. After that bit, I'm reading about her time in a prison...then after three or so chapters, I'm reading about a time that happened BEFORE this graduation ceremony. What the heck? 92 pages in, and I'm going to have to close it and shelf it.
